Death Stranding is probably hands down one of the most anticipated and the most star-studded upcoming game for the PlayStation 4, and may also be the first in a whole new genre. Hideo Kojima himself explains that he "wants all people to experience the entertainment medium of games, not only gamers but fans of film, novels, comics, music and art," and that the game's protagonist "is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before."
A recent video created by YouTuber YongYea mentions the comment of a "prolific developer" who apparently did not like the game and thinking it was "weird" that he "wasn't really a fan" after playing the game. Though this may be the case, it does not point to any conclusion that the game is bad, in fact, this only adds to the notion that Death Stranding is something unique and will probably start a new trend in video games.
First, Best, or Must
"This game is being woven together through numerous strands and human connections, including strands with you: the fans. The picture that forms on this tapestry is already beautifully drawn in my mind, and is right now, being woven together with the utmost care. It is sure to form an image unlike any seen before. I hope that the strand with you will be a special one." - Hideo Kojima
Hideo Kojima's vision of Death Stranding perfectly fits Sony's criteria in terms of video game development. According to Shawn Layden, developers must fulfill either one the company's First, Best, and Must criteria before getting a green light on their project. With "First" referring to the creation of a game whose genre does not exist, "Best" referring to being the best in the class, and "Must" in reference to the games the company needs to create despite the low-income probability. Death Stranding is Hideo's deep fascination for the entertainment industry combined with his passion for video game development, to expect something predictable from someone so dedicated to his craft is an understatement.
