After almost two years since it's accidental subway leak, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is finally out in the open. As the final entry to the series reboot, the mentioned installment was dubbed to be the biggest and most challenging chapter in the iconic trilogy. Hype, however, is not everything and for those who are still having second thoughts about the game, a short overview based on the experience of some of the gaming industry's most respected critics might just be the dose of enlightenment you seek.
"With a story that manages to satisfactorily tread the line between high-concept fun and grounded character exploration, Shadow of the Tomb Raider meaningfully wraps up the journey Lara began in 2013 and convincingly leaves her in a place resembling where she was when we were first introduced to her more than 20 years ago." IGN 9/10
Shadow of the Tomb Raider managed to get a decent 78/100 score made up of 32 positive, 10 mixed, and 1 negative response from 43 critics who dissected the game. IGN gave the game an impressive score of 9/10 calling it "a powerful finale to Lara Croft's origin trilogy" citing the game's huge environment, puzzles, and combat as some of its strongest attributes. But not everyone shares this opinion.
"Making the journey to Shadow of the Tomb Raider's peaks is certainly an attractive goal, but like the challenging terrain Lara needs to traverse, the path there is getting rougher and more unpredictable." Gamespot 6/10
Gamespot, on the other hand, gave the game a fair score of 6/10 indicating the inconsistency of stealth and inept combat mechanics as some of its flaws. Aside from that, the reviewer also pointed out the platforming mechanics of the game as another foible due to some inconsistencies which will eventually lead to frustration.
All in all, most critics agree that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a satisfying conclusion in Lara Croft's epic journey in becoming the tomb raider. Like most sequels, the game is not perfect and despite its new features will never measure up to its predecessors. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is available now for the PlayStation 4.
