NetherRealm's latest installment to the iconic Mortal Kombat series seems to be having a rough first week. On its first day alone, Mortal Kombat 11
has been facing multiple criticisms pertaining to some of its features which are said to have been designed for microtransactions. In line with that topic, a new thread on Reddit detailing the total amount needed to purchase each character skin on the game has been getting a lot of traction. According to the analysis, it will take the player $6,440 USD to purchase all 56 character skins in the game (there are 60 skins, 4 can be unlocked by simply playing the game).
There are 23 characters in the game, each of which has 60 skins. But playing through the story, character tutorial and basic towers will usually unlock 4 of these, so we have 56 skins to unlock
So based on these, we get: 23 * 56 * 5 = $6440
Note that these calculations include the patch which the devs promised would solve the progression issues
Do take note that the estimate is based on the Redditor's experience and may vary for each player. With that said, the formula (shown above) is based on the 760 Krystals the OP acquired during his 4 hours of playing the game. A single character skin costs 500 Time Crystals which means it will take 3390 hours or roughly more than four months of non-stop playing to unlock every single item. Playing 4 Hours every day will take players more than two years to collect every single article.
It was also noted that the player needs luck since the skins are made available in sets of five that rotates every 6-8 hours. After which the player may have to grind the towers to acquire them. A comparison was also made with MKX which according to the post only requires $40 USD to unlock all skins, fatalities, brutalities and DLC characters. Do take note that that the computation is only focused on the character skins and does not include, In other words, the game wants to instill the idea that feeding our vanity requires hard work, and that is not bad at all.
To be fair, it seems that MK11 is designed to last for a long period of time. The game is more like the real world, earning currency requires hard work and purchasing cosmetic items is optional. It seems that Mortal Kombat 11 aims to provide a literal meaning of the word "reward" by providing players two options of acquiring these items; the easy way or the hard way. In other words, the game wants to instill the idea that feeding our vanity requires hard work, and that is not bad at all. The difficulty setting in the Towers of Time, however, is a totally different story.
